Indochine Natural Penang Island-based Australian Master Formulator, Dr Mike Thair, talks about
Our Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea ) is cultivated and distilled in France by Société Coopérative Agricole des Plantes à Parfum de Provence. This cooperative is committed to the Censo approach. This is a sustainable development strategy. For example, they replace mineral fertilizers with organic fertilizers. Full traceability is guaranteed.
The aromatic portion originates in the flowering top and foliage portion of this tall perennial. It is considered by many perfumers as possessing a characteristic note of sexuality.
In the last forty years, this plant has been commercially cultivated in France, Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Italy, Morocco, Romania, England, and Yugoslavia. The character and fragrance can vary. This depends on its geographical origin. For example, I have found that the oil from Russia can be a lot different from that sourced from France. The French-cultivated Clary Sage has a “softer” edge to it than the Russian version.
Clary sage essential oil is expensive essential oil. But, I find it calming, revitalising, and balancing. Great to vaporise when you need to de-stress and loosen up.
And why is it such a great de-stressing oil? The relaxing properties result from a naturally occurring constituent called linalyl acetate. This has been scientifically documented in Aromatherapy: evidence for sedative effects of the essential oil of lavender after inhalation. G Buchbauer, L Jirovetz, W Jäger, H Dietrich, C Plank. Z Naturforsch C J Biosci Nov-Dec 1991;46(11-12).
If we compare the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for our last batch of Lavandula angustifolia sourced from France it shows a linalyl acetate concentration of 37.60%.In comparison, our clary sage essential oil (Salvia sclarea), also sourced from France, has a linalyl acetate concentration of 70%. So, that’s about double. Therefore, Clary Sage is a far more effective essential oil for promoting calm and sleep.
Mandy Aftel (Essence & Alchemy. A Natural History of Perfume. Gibbs Smith, 2008) describes Clary Sage as “the sweetheart of aromatherapy oils for its calming, revitalizing, and balancing properties.”
Aromatically, I would describe Clary Sage Essential Oil as herbaceous, and earthy, with a slightly floral scent. Not everyone likes the fragrance of Clary Sage alone. Blending with other essential oils can camouflage the aroma and allow you to take advantage of this wonderful oil.
I use Clary Sage in our Essence des Plantes Organic Face Oil, plus in a few Private Label products.
We sell Clary Sage essential oil in 10 mL bottles, but there are few buyers because of the high price. Also, the fragrance takes a while for you to accept. But, I and many others, find it a very calming oil. Try it, and discover its calming effects.
